We are experts in Colombian emeralds.
The brand Monteverde Emeralds was launched in 2018. Behind the brand, there is a team of emeralds experts who have been involved in the sector for decades. Our sourcing office located in Bogotá is one of the key pillars of our business. We are well-connected in the local market and we have a network of trusted suppliers - established traditional operators, but also smaller, less well-known mining partners - that give us access to the prime quality emeralds that we require. A lean supply chain enables us to respond quickly to client requests.
Most of our gemstones are cut and polished in Bogotá, a global centre of excellence and expertise in the handling and faceting of emeralds. The master lapidaries that we work with are some of the most skilled and most experienced in the trade. By drawing on these local resources, we provide an income to Colombians and help to preserve those skills for the future.
Our marketing and sales office is based in Germany. Through partners and at our own facilities in Europe, we can provide the after-care for your emerald needs. Certificates from reputable laboratories provide customers with peace of mind about the provenance and characteristics of our gemstones. Trust and honesty are at the heart of our business.
"Our clients are at the heart of our business and we value a close relationship with our clients, based on personal contact. We want to be your partner for fine Colombian emeralds. We aim to educate and inspire the interested public and reach a wide and diverse audience. We strive to promote fine Colombian emeralds at competitive prices and raise the level of quality currently accessible in the market. We do so responsibly and we do our share to provide an income to mining communities in Colombia."
We are wholesale suppliers to reputable jewellery houses and goldsmiths - primarily, but not exclusively, around Europe. If you are a private individual, we can point you to one of our network partners who will assist with designing and manufacturing your dream jewellery.
Since the 1990s, considerable efforts have been made improve the image of mining practices and to bring prosperity to the region of Boyacá, where the mines are located. A modern mining code exists and all operations have to be licensed. There is a system of fees, sales taxes and export taxes, a portion of which benefits social projects in the region. Environmentally harmful open-pit mining is prohibited. Child-labour is prohibited. There is a national minimum wage and traditionally, the miners get a share of any new discoveries. Strict safety regulations exist and have to be adhered to. The use of explosives is strictly supervised by the army and handlers of explosives have to be properly trained. Emerald mining does not involve any harmful chemicals.
Emerald miners are proud and mining is a way of life to them. Tunnel mining is hard work, mostly manual labour using powerful drills, and only very occasionally aided by the use of explosives. Once a pocket of emeralds is found, they are carefully excavated using hand tools. Every emerald found here is worth its price and the miners deserve to be remunerated for their hard labour! Emerald deposits are hard to predict and success can be erratic. This is why the cost of mining in Colombia is much higher than the cost of the industrial-scale open-pit mining in Zambia.
There are dozens of mines dotted around the localities of Muzo and Chivor and while we work with some of the big traditional Colombian mining operators, we also like to partner with some smaller, artisanal operations, which provide a livelihood to many locals and which are deeply rooted in the local communities. Colombia has a large home-grown lapidary industry that provides an income to thousands.
